Campaigns to eradicate or stem the spread of AIDS, SARS, malaria, and Ebola attest to the increasing importance of globally-oriented health organizations. These organizations may be national, regional, international, or even non-state organizations-like Medicins Sans Frontieres. One of the more important recent trends in global health governance, though, has been the rise of public-private partnerships (PPPs) where private non-governmental organizations, for-profit enterprises, and various other social entrepreneurs work hand-in-hand with governments to combat specific maladies. A primary driver for this development is the widespread belief that by joining together, PPPs will attack health problems and fund shared efforts more effectively than other systems. As Chelsea Clinton and Devi Sridhar show in Governing Global Health, these partnerships are not only importan

Trade Review
This is not only a timely and original book, but also a model of concise scholarship. After a quarter of a century working in the arena of global health, it wasn't until I read this book that I understood fully either the major institutions with which we so often work or the challenges before us now. Furthermore, Clinton and Sridhar have managed a minor miracle: they've made dry matters of governance interesting and even entertaining. This engaging study deserves a broad audience. Since the survival of tens of millions hang in the balance, as does the well-being of most on this planet, the stakes are greater than we know." - Paul Farmer MD, Partners In Health and Harvard Medical School
Who runs the world and why? Chelsea Clinton and Devi Sridhar ask this audacious question in this powerful and uncompromising book. They unmask the big four global health institutions of our era for the first time. Gostin, University Professor and Founding O'Neill Chair in Global Health Law, Georgetown Law School
The landscape of 'global health' is so fragmented, with so many agencies and private players in the picture, that it can be impossible to figure out who is in charge of everything from outbreaks to battling the tobacco industry. It argues that a shift to complex systems approaches to policymaking is overdue. Sally Sheldon, Kent University Law School, UK 'Lynn Hagger makes a carefully argued, up-to-date case for basing decisions in children's and young people's health care much more firmly in the 1998 Human Rights Act and the 1989 UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Her book summarises and comments on a wealth of relevant law and controversial debates, and ranges from children's individual decisions to their potential greater involvement in health services planning.' In particular, morbid emphasis on academic excellence has created much competition and stress in high school students. It was estimated that around one-fifth of secondary school students in Hong Kong had different forms of mental disorders. In a three-year longitudinal study, it was found that the prevalence rates of Internet addiction in Secondary 1, Secondary 2 and Secondary 3 students were 26.4%, 26.6% and 22.5%, respectively. In the same study, suicidal ideation in junior secondary school students was found in more than one-tenth of the students. At the same time, there were more than two-tenths of students showing signs of self-harm and suicidal behaviour in junior secondary years. The number of adolescents experiencing economic disadvantage has increased while family solidarity has dropped in recent years. In spite of these adolescent developmental issues, the lack of life education and life skills training in secondary school students has made the situation worse. Although moral and civic education is one of the pillars in the new 6-year secondary school curriculum, there are several problems involved. First, the coverage on social and emotional learning in the curriculum guide is very thin. Second, although there are curricula materials on life skills training in the field, validated curricula are almost non-existent. In fact, in a review of adolescent prevention and positive youth development programs in Asia, Shek and Yu pointed out that there were very few validated evidence-based programs in Hong Kong. Third, training in social-emotional learning and adolescent prevention programs is grossly inadequate in Hong Kong. Finally, while nobody would dispute the importance of life skills and psychosocial competence, such topics are seldom taught in depth in the school contexts.
Book Synopsis
This abridged edition uses the organization and methods that health law teachers and students have found so helpful over the last seven editions of the casebook. Most public discourse about excessive police violence focuses, understandably, on the horrors of civilian deaths. In From Enforcers to Guardians, Hannah L. F. Cairns's writing is a fine example of how science can be presented to the general reader in an extremely scholarly way, and why writing of this kind can be of equal interest to fellow scientists, reflecting as it does a remarkable imagination and intellect... [A] reflective and thoughtful account... "--Sir David Weatherall, The Times Higher Education Supplement "[Cairns's] lucid exposition shows how experiments, observations, and calculations support some of the grand conclusions of modern biology. He offers fresh--although sometimes controversial--insights."--Joel E. Cohen, Nature "A brilliant and impressive analysis... [t]his book should be in everyone's personal library for many reasons; first, because Cairns is a lyrical writer and, second, he writes about science and molecular biology based on vast scientific knowledge, stressing the importance of history and of appreciating ultimate causes for all aspects of our lives and all that affects us. Interwoven are his perceptions of the beautiful and gracious things in life-art, music, literature-all with exquisite clarity. Matters is a joy to read."--Choice "Although this is a set of essays rather than an autobiography... several incidents of the distinguished physician-researcher's life surface amusingly... Clearly written and presented so that it should be accessible to students in both sociology and health studies... An immense contribution to medical sociology. -- Robert Dingwall Society 2008 Conrad's accomplishment is significant. The Medicalization of Society is simply the most lucid treatise on the patterns and consequences of medicalization to date. It is also a much needed warning about the darker side of medicalization. -- Regina Smardon Culture 2008 This is an extremely interesting, timely and thought-provoking book, which will have a wide appeal amongst academics. Medical sociologists will welcome the opportunity to see Conrad's various writings brought together in one volume, and will appreciate the way he has revisited and updated his own work. -- Susie Scott Health Sociology Review 2008 The issues raised by this monograph are important, complex, and increasingly relevant for all of us who live in the modern world. -- S. Elizabeth Whitmore Themelios 2008 Peter Conrad's book is largely comprised of a series of case studies used to illustrate the changing nature of medicalization... With his 30-year history of studying this topic, Conrad is just the right person to take on the task, and this book represents a significant contribution to the area. -- Heather Hartley Contemporary Sociology 2009 Peter Conrad is the doyen of studies in medicalization. From his work on hyperactivity in the 1970s to his more recent research on 'geniticization' Conrad has documented the twists and turns of medical involvement in an ever increasing range of human problems. In this new book he does more than offer a reprise of his work or of the field. Rather, he sets out an illustrated framework for understanding and studying medicalization, with a view to future possible developments as well as current debates. -- Mike Bury Sociology of Health and Illness 2009 This short, tightly written, highly readable book deals with issues, often previously regarded as normal aging or personality flaws, that have moved under the domain of medicine...
