This book examines and celebrates the long history of hei tiki and the enduring cultural potency of these taonga or cultural treasures. This first book on hei tiki for 60 years is written by the Acting Senior Curator Matauranga Māori at Te Papa, who is a hei tiki expert, and includes a large selection of hei tiki, most from the taonga Māori collections of Te Papa, whichis the largest in New Zealand and very likely the world. This exceptional period of design covers the neo-Gothic and historicist designs of the mid- to late nineteenth century, the groundbreaking work of British Arts and Crafts designers, sinuous curves influenced by the European Art Nouveau movement and the structural modernity of the 1930s. The collection contains jewellery by some of the finest historicist designers, including the Castellani and Giuliano families and John Brogden, as well as a spectacular decanter by William Burges. There are important pieces of jewellery and silver by the most famous of Arts and Crafts designers, including C.R. Ashbee, Henry Wilson, Gilbert Marks and John Paul Cooper. Unique pieces designed by the artist Charles Ricketts hold a special place in the history of queer art in Britain, having been designed for his friends Katherine Bradley and Edith Cooper, a couple known collectively as Michael Field. Modernist silver is represented by leaders of the field Omar Ramsden and H.G. Murphy. This beautifully illustrated volume reproduces 70 of the Museum’s most important pieces from this period, many previously unpublished, with comparative illustrations of some of the original designs. Importantly, the book is arranged chronologically by designer and includes biographies, a description of their work and how it changed over time, as well as commentary about the specific works in the Museum’s collection. The book brings together for the first time the Fitzwilliam’s exceptionally fine holdings of jewellery and metalwork from this highly popular and fruitful period of design.

Table of Contents
Director’s Foreword Foreword Acknowledgements Introduction Designers Catalogue Glossary Notes Bibliography Index
Book Synopsis

Resin jewellery first started in the US around 6 years ago and has now become one of the fastest-growing trends in jewellery making. Rings, pendants, brooches, cufflinks, hairpins and bracelets are all easy to make and look incredibly professional when done.

In this inspiring book, well-known crafter Sara Naumann shows you just how easy and quick resin jewellery is to make, using minimal equipment and readily available products, and provides over 50 fabulous projects for you to try. You can add numerous items to the resin to achieve different effects. You can place paper in the bezels to act as a background to the resin – such as old book paper, map paper, scrapbook paper and photographs. Paper can also be painted, stencilled, or layered with washi tape before being coated with resin. Try sheet music for a vintage vibe, or origami papers for a fresh, contemporary look.

In addition, you can also immerse various items in the resin before it cures, such as dried flowers and leaves, feathers, shells, beads and charms, or try adding glitter, coloured inks, nail polish and virtually anything else you can think of.

The versatility of resin jewellery is awe-inspiring, providing papercrafters as well as jewellery-makers with all the skills and inspiration they need to design and make their own stunning pieces.

Trade Review

Love this book. For foolproof tips, what else to add to the mix and fifty projects this book will tell you the rest.

I learned how to do this surprisingly simple and fun craft at the age of about eight with a kit. There are some safety precautions to follow as this is a toxic substance but once you know how to use it (and you already will if you are familiar with epoxy) the rest is fairly easy. This might make it sound boring, but it is an extremely versatile medium that can make some professional looking pieces and is a great way of recycling and upcycling all kinds of materials. The first part of the book deals with what you need and how to do the basics, troubleshooting, using paper, beads, findings etc and the rest is devoted to the projects. Before you get to them there is the excellent feature of a double page spread showing thumbnails of all of them so you can see at a glance what would interest you. These are arranged in four categories: using paper, coloring agents, powder inclusions and 3-D inclusions covering most basic aspects of this craft. Each project covers a page and features a large photograph of the finished item, a list of materials and tools plus the instructions as well as a basic description. This tells you a bit about the piece and also what you will learn by making it. Items used include all kinds of papers including wrapping paper, old books and paper napkins, coloring with things like nail polish, paint and ink, adding glitter, flitter and embossing powder and embedding elements such as old watch parts, presed flowers and shells. Most of the pieces are made using findings with frames and bezels but the final section shows how you can repurpose things like odd game tiles, flat metal shapes and even just a plastic sheet for freeform work. In short, this book manages to show how simple and fun resin work is and it is great to see a book on such an overlooked subject.

My tip to beginners is get a kit first and you will have all you need to get started.
* myshelf.com *

I was initially struck by the picture on the front of this book. It is over 150 pages long and the authors manage to cram a great deal of information into its pages. The book is highly illustrated with very clear photographs and the writing style is concise and informative - overall a very useful book for any jewellery maker to have in their library. The book is unusual in that it covers both beading and metalworking. Most books on these subjects stick to one or the other because the tools and techniques are so different. But those who enjoy making bead jewellery often want to move on into metalworking of various kinds so this book covers that transition neatly. The two authors are each specialists in their own type of jewellery making - Sara Withers in beading and Xuella Arnold in metalworking - so each subject is covered by and expert in the field. In all, this is a beautifully written and illustrated book and really does manage to cover a huge range of techniques that will be enjoyed by many. Beginners will find it an excellent primer with a very wide sweep while advanced metalworkers will find it fills gaps in their knowledge and shows some new and interesting ways of improving their techniques.
* Bead Society For Great Britain *

Table of Contents

Prelims 5

Introduction 2

Metal Jewelry Basics 20

Working with Metal 48

Simple Jewelry Designs 16

Threading and Finishing 28

Using Wire and Metal 26

Experimenting with New Materials 10

Index and Creditsn5

Book Synopsis
Silver is an exciting and versatile material for jewellery makers, both beginners and the more advanced, and nothing beats the satisfaction of creating and making your own designs. Jewellers, like other studio craftspeople, rode the wave of popularity for the hand-made and authentic that was at the heart of the counterculture.

In Flux is the story of how their jewellery contributed to the raucous, contradictory, and enthusiastic clamour for a new kind of society that made the 1960s and 1970s so extraordinary.

Book Synopsis

Tadema Gallery was founded in 1978 by Sonya and David Newell-Smith in London's famed Camden Passage in Islington. The book begins with simple geometric structures and moves on to explore more complex forms through a range of distortions and multiplications. The goal is not to show finished pieces of jewelry but to provide the tools that will enable readers to acquire a work method that allows them to represent their ideas effectively. From orthogonal and axonometric projections to techniques (watercolor, tempera, ink, mixed technique) and different possible supports, readers will find a source of inspiration for developing their own designs. Having learned about geometry, perspective and representation of materials in the first volume, this second book in this two-part series delves deeper into the process of designing jewellery, from the first sketch to the final representation, with special emphasis on how to work on ideas, plan a collection, and design and depict a wide variety of pieces. The fundamentals of drawing different pieces, such as necklaces, rings, earrings, and bracelets, are carefully explained and illustrated in the book, which includes all the technical details to be taken into consideration when planning a jewellery piece, from the executive point of view. While the first volume focused on the tools needed to be able to accurately convey ideas, draw different materials, facets and effects, and master the use of colour, this publication tackles the process from the initial idea, based in natural or geometrical forms, to the final drawing of the completed piece, including illustration techniques and sources of inspiration, all aspects that will stir up the reader's creativity. It is the ultimate tool and resource for jewellery students and professionals, and even illustrators in search of professional guidelines in freehand drawing and painting techniques when representing jewellery.
