Madness and Enterprise reveals the economic norms embedded within psychiatric thinking about mental illness in the North Atlantic world. Over the course of the nineteenth century, various forms of madness were subjected to a style of psychiatric reasoning that was preoccupied with money. Psychiatrists across Western Europe and the United States attributed financial and even moral value to an array of pathological conditions, such that some mental disorders were seen as financial assets and others as economic liabilities. By turning to economic conduct and asking whether potential patients appeared capable of managing their financial affairs or even generating wealth, psychiatrists could often bypass diagnostic uncertainties about a person's mental state. This book offers us a radically new perspective on the history of psychiatry. It also puts forth a fascinating philosophy of psychiatry which places irrationalism at the heart of modern capitalism.” -- Camille Robcis, Columbia University
“For too long, we have accepted a contrast between madness and reason and all the more so between madness and economics. But Bassiri brilliantly demonstrates how our conceptions of madness and moral value are shot through with economic ideas, that in modern societies madness has had a fully economic rationality, that this economic rationality matters for social thought as much as for psychiatric treatments. In a historical epistemology that forces us to reread classics of modern psychology as much as relearn its story through half-forgotten intellectuals, he offers something truly original: a theory of suffering amid capitalist enterprise, and of the ways in which we can imagine a form of care unbound by a century and a half of transactional thinking.” -- Stefanos Geroulanos, New York University
Book Synopsis
For around half of the couples who have trouble conceiving the cause of infertility is sperm-related. With chapters provided by true international experts in the field, this book gives real examples of the implementation of AI and machine learning in human pathology.Advances in machine learning and AI in general have propelled computational and general pathology research. Today, computer systems approach the diagnostic levels achieved by humans for certain well-defined tasks in pathology. At the same time, pathologists are faced with an increased workload both quantitatively (numbers of cases) and qualitatively (the amount of work per case, with increasing treatment options and the type of data delivered by pathologists also expected to become more fine-grained). AI will support and leverage mathematical tools and implement data-driven methods as a center for data interpretation in modern tissue diagnosis and pathology. Digital or computational pathology will also foster the training of future computational pathologists, those with both pathology and non-pathology backgrounds, who will eventually decide that AI-based pathology will serve as an indispensable hub for data-related research in a global health care system. Some of the specific topics explored within include an introduction to DL as applied to Pathology, Standardized Tissue Sampling for Automated Analysis, integrating Computational Pathology into Histopathology workflows. Readers will also find examples of specific techniques applied to specific diseases that will aid their research and treatments including but not limited to; Tissue Cartography for Colorectal Cancer, Ki-67 Measurements in Breast Cancer, and Light-Sheet Microscopy as applied to Virtual Histology. The key role for pathologists in tissue diagnostics will prevail and even expand through interdisciplinary work and the intuitive use of an advanced and interoperating (AI-supported) pathology workflow delivering novel and complex features that will serve the understanding of individual diseases and of course the patient.
Book Synopsis
Part of the highly regarded Biopsy Interpretation Series, this fully revised volume provides practical, highly illustrated information on the diagnosis and prognosis of the full range of biopsies of the various tissues of the head and neck region, including the ear. Biopsy Interpretation of the Head and Neck, 3rd Edition, addresses both common and unusual issues that arise in day-to-day practice, with an emphasis on the complex area of the upper aerodigestive tract and ear.

Discusses both neoplastic and non-neoplastic entities to help you arrive at an accurate diagnosis and guide patient management.

Provides new information about emerging diagnostic entities and ancillary testing.

Covers squamous cell carcinomas, HPV-related tumors, bony lesions, odontogenic lesions, and more.

Incorporates selected and targeted use of ancillary techniques.

Features 200 additional images online, as well as a 50-question test bank for self-assessment and review.

Enrich Your eBook Reading Experience

Read directly on your preferred device(s), such as computer, tablet, or smartphone.

Easily convert to audiobook, powering your content with natural language text-to-speech.

the-international-academy-of-cytology-yokohama-system-for-reporting-breast-fine-needle-aspiration-biopsy-cytopathology-9783030268855
The International Academy of Cytology Yokohama
Book Synopsis
This text describes a system of reporting breast fine needle aspiration biopsy that uses five clearly defined categories, each described by a specific term and each with a specific risk of malignancy. This system concentrated on defining morphological characteristics of the most clinically significant form of bladder cancer, High Grade Urothelial Carcinoma. This new approach has been widely accepted throughout the world, and has become part of the daily practice of cytology. Considering that the first edition of The Paris System (TPS) introduced a new model of urinary cytodiagnosis, verification and expansion of initial material and data were anticipated. Based on evolving knowledge and readership requests, the group of highly experienced authors have created a new edition of TPS. This second edition includes areas and issues not originally covered. A new chapter on urine cytology of the upper tract, a rarely addressed topic, has been introduced. Furthermore, the issue of cellular degeneration is discussed in the criteria of all diagnostic categories. Examples of standardized reports are included in each chapter. Most importantly, a separate chapter presents data defining the risk of malignancy (ROM) for each diagnostic category to inform clinical management. New high quality images augment those of the first edition to better illustrate diagnostic clues and potential pitfalls. In addition to chapters on diagnostic criteria, current concepts of pathogenesis of bladder cancer, specimen adequacy and preparation, and ancillary tests are covered in separate chapters. A bonus to the volume is a comprehensive history of urine as the earliest diagnostic sample of human disease, richly illustrated with artworks from major museums.

Written by internationally recognized authorities, this comprehensive and evidence-based guide to urine cytology is supported by the newest data confirming the original concept and significance of diagnostic criteria defining High Grade Urothelial Carcinoma. But when it occurs, especially in a young person, the acute loss can generate a substantial amount of grief with a great sense of disbelief. This mysterious and dreadful condition instils much fear and anxiety into the living, and more specifically for family members and friends. Understandably, the apprehension is brought about by the unexpectedness of the event and uncertainty of the consequences. The feeling of uneasiness is largely attributed to the lack of information regarding this condition. However in recent years, several causes of sudden death have been clarified. Treatment modalities have improved and reduced the occurrence of dying suddenly. This book is meant for anyone who wants to know more about sudden death. It aims to diminish its terror by explaining the various conditions that predispose individuals to sudden death and ways which may prevent it from occurring.
Book Synopsis
The definitive survey of diagnostic dermatopathologyâand the single-best resource for addressing differential diagnosis at the microscopic level

A Doody's Core Title for 2023 & 2024!

For virtually every kind of skin lesion, this skill-sharpening resource has everything clinicians need to successfully perform differential diagnosis at the microscopic level. Barnhill's Dermatopathology features a systematic, algorithmic approach that cuts through the complexity of the disciplineâs traditional disease-oriented focus, providing a ready-to-use diagnostic tool that puts the entire world of dermatopathology into perspective.

This classic has won acclaim as the only dermatology pathology resource that is valuable for both teaching and for clinical practice and differential diagnosis. Fans of the single-authored book can rest easy, as the authors have done a wonderful job of maintaining the pragmatic approach of earlier editions. Although extensive revisions and updates have been made, they augment rather than replace the original voice of the book. Surgical pathology has grown increasingly subspecialized throughout the years, but this book still provides great value as a general reference. The information provided on each disease is enough to not only diagnose, but intelligently discuss the topic and pursue further reading.
