A Worthwhile Medicine tells the story of how and why he persuaded reluctant health regulators, sceptical investors and a conservative medical establishment that cannabis really could form the basis for a modern pharmaceutical - which he defines as 'a worthwhile medicine that can make money'. He had built up one publicly quoted pharmaceutical company only to have to step down from the top job after a failed attempt to float on the UK stock market. Undeterred, he started another venture after hearing heartrending tales of how multiple sclerosis sufferers were being denied symptom-relief because cannabis was a prohibited drug. He believed the answer was not to change the law and decriminalise recreational drugs but to create a licensed medicine from cannabis that doctors could prescribe safely for their patients. Company Politics offers a commanding interpretation of this episode that explains the curious durability of the much-reviled trading companies, and company states, well into the nineteenth century. Elizabeth Cross is a skilled researcher, a discerning interpreter of politics, and an urbane writer. * Paul Cheney, University of Chicago *
Company Politics offers an arresting account of how the Third French East India Company came to embody a new type of global trading corporation, one divested of sovereign attributes and relying instead on economic power to project royal influence abroad. This book adds a critical new perspective to the growing literature on the dynamic relationship between imperial governance and political economy in the final decades of the eighteenth century. * Rafe Blaufarb, author of The Great Demarcation: The French Revolution and the Invention of Modern Property *
This superb study of the last French East India Company examines the final decades of the old regime French empire in India, making clear the geopolitical and economic possibilities it still appeared to present. Following the company into the 1790s, when it was at the center of the French Revolution's greatest corruption scandal, Cross examines how revolutionary republicanism destabilized the patrimonial norms that underpinned the absolutist order. Comprehensively researched, deeply conceptualized, and a pleasure to read. * John Shovlin, author of Trading with the Enemy: Britain, France, and the 18th-Century Quest for a Peaceful World Order *
Company Politics is written with remarkable fluency, combining meticulous empirical research with nuanced yet authoritative analysis. Cross makes sense of France's New East India Company as a remedy—a concoction of trade-offs and contradictions, commerce and state, war and peace—prescribed to heal the wound of France's painful loss to the British in India. She guides us with ease and assurance from metropolitan debates and disputes, from old regime to new, across a great gap to the lived realities of France's disparate trading posts in India. This is an invaluable study of continuity underpinning revolutionary change that deepens our understanding of French commercial and imperial strategy in Asia far beyond the period it addresses. * Natasha Pairaudeau, author of Mobile Citizens: French Indians in Indochina, 1858-1954 *

Table of Contents
Acknowledgments Timeline of the Compagnies des Indes Introduction Chapter 1 The Company's Two Bodies Chapter 2 The Revolution of India Chapter 3 Diplomatic Intentions Chapter 4 Between the Colossus and the Tiger Chapter 5 Discredit Chapter 6 Revolutionary Regeneration Chapter 7 Notes on a Scandal Conclusion Appendix Notes Bibliography Index
Book Synopsis

For almost a hundred years from the 1860s, the City of London''s overseas banks financed the global trade that lay at the core of the British Empire. Foremost among them from the beginning were two start-up ventures: the Standard Bank of South Africa, which soon developed a powerful domestic franchise at the Cape, and the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China. This book traces their stories in the nineteenth century, their glory days before 1914 - and their remarkable survival in the face of global wars and the collapse of world trade in the first half of the twentieth century.

The unravelling of the Empire after 1945 eventually forced Britain''s overseas banks to confront a different future. The Standard and the Chartered, alarmed at the expansion of American banking, determined in 1969 on a merger as a way of sustaining the best of the City''s overseas traditions. But from the start, Standard Chartered had to grapple with the fading fortunes of its own inherited franchise - badly dented in both Asia and Africa - and with radical changes in the nature of banking. Its British managers, steeped in the past, proved ill-suited to the challenge. By the late 1980s, efforts to expand in Europe and the USA had brought the merged Group to the brink of collapse.

Yet it survived - and then pulled off a dramatic recovery. Standard Chartered realigned itself, just in time, with the phenomenal growth of Asia''s ''emerging markets'', many of them in countries where the Chartered had flourished a century earlier. In the process, the Group was transformed. Trebling its workforce, it brushed aside the global financial crisis of 2008 and by 2012 could look back on a decade of astonishing growth. Beginning his analysis with the financialization of the home-mortgage market in the 1930s, Prechel shows how pervasive these arrangements had become by the end of the century, when the bank and energy sectors developed political strategies to participate in financial markets. His account adopts a multilevel approach that considers the political and legal landscapes in which corporations are embedded to answer two questions: how did banks and financial firms transition from being providers of capital to financial market actors? Second, how did new organizational structures cause market participants to engage in high-risk activities? After careful historical analysis, Prechel examines how organizational and political-legal arrangements contribute to current record-high income and wealth inequality, and considers societal preconditions for change.

Trade Review
"This book offers a theoretically sophisticated, empirically rich explanation of how financialization was politically created in the United States beginning in the 1980s, and how it has increased inequality. Their withdrawal from racing coincided with a period of stagnation until the company was sold to De Tomaso in 1973. During the 1970s the V7 Sport and Le Mans were at the forefront of the new superbike era, and later, with Dr John Wittner's help, embraced contemporary technology with the 1000cc Daytona. If one aspect characterises Moto Guzzi it is continuity. The great 500cc Falcone single ran from 1950 until 1976, and the V7, originally seeing the light of day in 1967, continued well into the 2010s. This continuity breeds loyalty, and Guzzi owners are a fiercely proud breed. Guzzis are not like other motorcycles, even Italian ones, and to qualify as a Guzzi owner requires a dedication and individuality that will be rewarded in a long term relationship.

Trade Review
This latest edition brings us bang up to date with the inclusion of the V85 concept seen in Milan in 2017. This is not a model-by-model exposition of the marque but is presented in the form of chapters representing either an era or an iconic model from the Mandello factory. Thus, the author covers the early days, racing success, the V7 and derivatives, while the Le mans and the Dr John machines get a chapter each. There is a wealth of information here for anyone interested in Moto Guzzi. The financial state of the company as it went from owner to owner and the story of the V8 racer are especially interesting. I was surprised by how many historical nuggets were to be found and there are plenty of pictures. This would make a grand gift for anyone who has recently acquired a Guzzi. Ot treat yourself. - Gambalunga. It is an excellent read and bang up to date, covering the still to be released V85 Adventure bike and with features on models and production details from 1921 to 2018. Virtually every question you could have about Guzzi's is answered. Whatever model you own you will enjoy this book. -Guzzi Parlante. As with all of their updates of older marque histories they have taken the original work first published in 1998 and modernised it, improving pictures and text where necessary without destroying the original factual tome. Just short of 300 pages it brings the story up to date and include all of this year's models. All the history is documented in the well-laid out and heavily illustrated pages, including information on their racing success during the 1930s, and then the 1950s when they dominated 250 and 350cc Grand Prix racing. Given the time span between the various updates, I would recommend any Guzzi aficionado to get a copy of this latest work in order to be ready to celebrate their centennial in a few years' time. - Ian Kerr. This book hits the coffee table with a real thud, and in it Ian Falloon successfully takes on the ominous task of telling the entire story of Moto Guzzi from its beginnings in 1921 right up to the present day. - Old Bike Mart. With the help of Moto Guzzi staff, past and present, and foremost Guzzi expert Ivar de Gier, leading motorcycle historian Ian Falloon presents a comprehensive history. It is not so well-known that Veloce Ltd also produced some twin-cylinder machines: the Roarer, for racing, and the Model O for production. These bikes had many engineering features in common, such as twin contra-rotating crank shafts, inline cranks, shaft drive, and swing arm rear suspension. The supercharged Roarer was never raced because of the advent of war; this also put paid to the development of the Model O, which would have been the first so-called "Superbike." After the war, the Goodman family, owners of Veloce Ltd, focused on the production of a "Motorcycle for Everyman" - an idea that had featured in their production bikes since the formation of the company. They drew on the ideas embodied in the Roarer and the Model O to produce the twin cylinder LE range of motorcycles. These, however, were not well received by the motorcycling public, and many blame the production of the LE for the eventual demise of the company. The purpose of the book is to present, from an engineering perspective, an analysis of the Roarer and the Model O, comparing and contrasting the methods adopted by their designers to meet the different design specifications of these bikes, and to illustrate how the ideas developed in this exercise appeared in the LE range of motorcycles. The authors, Brian Agnew and Ivan Rhodes, met in the 1960s when Brian worked at Rolls-Royce Derby. They spent their weekends tinkering with motorcycles, and both have an intimate knowledge of the Velocette twins both from their time spent together and from their personal projects.

Table of Contents
Introduction: In the Beginning Part 1. It is also remarkable that, in 2013, the latter is still in service, albeit in dwindling numbers, but still representing a company that was formed 102 years ago! Although the VC10 was prefixed with BAC by the time of its entry into service, the aircraft represents the rapid rise of Vickers, which actually embarked on its first aeronautical project in 1908, before establishing an official aviation department in 1911. Vickers produced over 70 different types of aircraft during a 49-year period, not including a host of sub-variants, the Wellington, for example, having 19 alone. Not all were successful, but every one contributed, however small, another nugget of experience, which was either ploughed into the next aircraft or stored away for the future. An ability to think outside the box', was another of Vickers' fortes. A good example of this was not only employing Barnes Wallis, but having such faith in his ideas, which must have seemed quite radical at the time, especially his perseverance and ultimate success with geodetic construction. Wallis had no shortage of critics and many dyed in the wool' employees of Vickers, during the early days, left the company because of his ideas. However, history has shown us that he was right about geodetics, and like Hawker with its Hurricane and Supermarine with its Spitfire, only God knows what the RAF would have done without the Wellington at the beginning of the Second World War. By the time the fire was extinguished the following morning, little was left of the world-famous waxworks beyond a few grotesquely distorted models and a pile of scrap iron, which was the remnants of one of Napoléon’s carriages. Those who now visit the waxworks probably assume that what was lost in 1925 was no very different to the present displays. However, the catalogues pre-dating the fire tell a very different story, for there was so much more to Madame Tussaud & Sons’ Exhibition than wax representations of the famous and the notorious. The fact is that the French model maker, and the three generations of her family who managed the business after her, were avid collectors of works of art, memorabilia and trivia relating to their displays: Madame Tussaud’s was, in fact, more of a cabinet of historical curiosities than a wax works. This is evidenced by the lost collection, which ranged from the bloodstained shirt of King Henri IV, worn when he was assassinated in 1610, to the blade of the original guillotine, via a large collection of 18th and 19th century pictures and sculptures by many of the leading artists of their day, furniture, clothing, and a priceless collection of Napoléonica from the Emperor’s tooth to three of his own carriages. Using contemporary accounts, the pre-fire catalogues, insurance inventories, and with unique access to the Madame Tussauds archives, Christopher Joll’s and Penny Cobham’s new illustrated book describes in chronological order the extraordinary items that were lost in 1925, set in the context of Madame Tussaud’s own story and the historical events surrounding the items in the lost collection – and, along the way, uncovers many fakes and forgeries, as well as a wealth of irreplaceable and priceless historical treasures.

Trade Review
“Today Madame Tussaud’s is one of the most successful and well-known brands in the location-based entertainment industry with 23 attractions spanning four continents.… But in many ways this is something of a miracle – for Madame Tussaud’s is a great British survival story… Penny and Christopher have brought our lost collection back to life. After spending ten months closely observing a software firm, Catherine J. Turco, one of sociology's brightest young stars, surprises with fascinating and nuanced answers. With a particularly keen ethnographic eye, the author reveals a brave new world in which some of the bars of the bureaucratic iron cage are pried open while others remain in place for the pursuit of corporate goals. While millennials gain a more personalized and empowering work environment in the bargain, business leaders gain fuller access to their inner thoughts and creativity. This book will have a lasting impact on the study of corporate cultures and new organizational forms. -- Michèle Lamont, author of The Dignity of Working Men
With The Conversational Firm, Turco uses the role of social media to challenge our fundamental assumptions about how modern organizations function. In this masterful work, she uncovers a new way of organizing where openness and hierarchy complement, rather than contradict one another. I'm putting this book next to my copies of Weber, Barnard, and Chandler. -- Damon Phillips, Columbia Business School
In The Conversational Firm, Turco argues that organizations can transcend bureaucracy, but still they are held in check by certain workplace demands for reproduction and stability. These checks seem to prevent the organization from becoming complete anarchy. Yet perhaps just as important, The Conversational Firm is a rich and delightful organizational ethnography of how work is being transformed in the era of social media. -- Brayden King, Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University
With a book that is as readable as it is wise, Turco makes a powerful case for the depth of insight that can only come from the best ethnographies—and is unavailable from the 'big data' analyses currently in vogue.
