However, there is a lack of good first-hand information about alternative career paths to research. From entrepreneurship, industry and the media to government, public relations, activism and teaching, this is a readable guide to science based skills, lifestyles and career paths. The ever-narrowing pyramid of opportunities within an academic career structure, or the prospect of a life in the laboratory losing its attraction, mean that many who trained in science and engineering now look for alternative careers. Thirty role models who began by studying many different disciplines give personal guidance for graduates, postgraduates and early-career scientists in the life sciences, physical sciences and engineering. In it, you can learn how many other opportunities there are for scientists outside the usual academic route. The book is full of first-rate practical advice, emphasising the value of a self-assessment of your skills and interests, and illustrating that there is a major demand for people with training in science in many areas ranging from entrepreneurship and policy to PR and politics. Above all, do something you enjoy and believe is worthwhile, and do not consider yourself a failure because you have not continued in academic research.' Sir Walter Bodmer, Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine
'The enthusiastic and positive accounts in this book provide ample evidence that there is life beyond the lab, and that it can be a good life: rewarding, fulfilling and richly varied. To take that decision to go where the grass might be greener requires careful thought and the application of your best research skills - to research your own future. This book provides one major source of information, advice and a great range of personal words of guidance to help inform your next step.' Gordon Chesterman, University of Cambridge Careers Service
'… offers students and early career scientists the indispensable personal experience of more than thirty skilled professionals who started out as academics and ended up in the most varied array of successful professions. Reading about the many routes that a scientist can choose, from becoming an EU-level regulatory expert and lobbyist, to a company founder and multi-millionaire, this book is not only insightful but also inspirational for those eager to branch out from the confines of their science. I wish I had had the opportunity of feasting my eyes on this a quarter of a century ago as I scratched my head as to which way to turn once I left the lab.' Nathalie Moll, European Association for Bioindustries, Belgium
'If there's one valuable message here it's 'know thyself - but don't dismiss serendipity'. While the advice of careers professionals to analyse skills and preferences is important, the personal stories show just how important it is to keep an open mind and that even the most successful career isn't really planned but relies on a willingness to grasp opportunities. For women, as a minority in the UK STEM workforce, these personal case studies offer reassurance that it's good to take risks and great careers await us all.' This exciting resource provides guidance on the proper design of indoor ranges for RF antenna measurements. The important aspects of specifying the range or resources needed in a development program are explored. Analysis of existing ranges to determine their suitability for performing specific test that a user of the range may require is also introduced. Readers find in-depth coverage of the design of ranges and how to evaluate the error contributions of the range and the best approach to measure a system, antenna, or other radiating hardware. The book provides information on selecting the right range to make a specific type of measurement and understanding for an RF absorber. Matlab scripts are also included to help readers estimate the performance of an RF absorber. Readers will be able to estimate the required space for a given type of measurement, as well as identify what type of range is the better choice, based on physical limitations and economics. Simple rules for the design of an anechoic chamber, based on the required accuracy and parameters to be measured are described. This extensively revised and expanded edition of an Artech House bestseller delivers the most up-to-date overview of electronic defense systems. Bringing practitioners up-to-speed with the latest technological advances, the Third Edition details a completely new method of implementing these modern systems. Moreover, this edition is packed with updated illustrations of key assets, including aircraft, ships, and radars. Readers get a solid understanding of how sophisticated electronic warfare weapon systems work, and how these weapons can be intercepted and electronically jammed. From search and tracking radar, IR systems, and communication systems… to electronic intercept systems, countermeasures, and counter-countermeasures, the book explores a broad spectrum of defense equipment. It explains how these systems operate, the advantages and drawbacks of each system, and the theories on which these systems are based. This authoritative resource includes 180 illustrations and 400 equations that support key topics throughout the book.

Trade Review
The first edition of the classic, Introduction to Electronic Defense Systems, was published in 1991, the second in 2006 and this, the 3rd, in 2018, thus clearly demonstrating the point author Filippo Neri makes about the increasing pace and impressive evolution of such technologies. The 3rd edition continues the pattern established in the earlier editions with the initial chapter providing an expanded overview of electronic defense systems and new concepts, threats and opportunities including cyber and Cyber Electromagnetic Activities. As such these 36 pages provide the context to understand the technological issues in the remaining 7 Chapters. Not unexpectedly, these are sometimes necessarily brief introductions to complex issues. However, besides providing context for what follows, they serve to whet the appetite of the reader and encourage further study. The up-to-date and comprehensive references complement this process well. The chapter running order is Electronic Defense; Sensors; Weapon Systems; Electronic Intercept Systems, Electronic Countermeasure Systems; Electronic Counter-Countermeasure Systems; New Electronic Defense Techniques and Technologies, and Design and Evaluation Criteria. The author notes that formulas and mathematical theory have been reduced to a minimum; that may well have been the intent but the 3rd edition includes 180 illustrations and around 400 equations! The book remains very readable throughout, with excellent diagrams and explanations of everything covered by a true master in the field and a great communicator. As mentioned, the structure of the 3rd edition follows that of the 2nd edition with additional material on new concepts and materials e.g. Artificial Intelligence and Gallium Nitride, to name just two. The 3rd edition is an evolution of the early editions and that makes perfect sense. The new edition is primarily aimed at those who are entering the world of Electronic Systems (Electronic Warfare, Signals Intelligence, CEMA, ISR, Navigation and NAVWAR, etc.) in a technical sense and deserves a place in everyone's personal library and in the industry. Given the accelerating pace of innovation, global threats and opportunities, there is likely to be an increasing audience for this book and others like it, covering warfare in the Electromagnetic manoeuvre warfare space, or EME / EM Domain. As the name implies, the book uses US terminology which diverged from NATO terminology some 25 years ago, but remained broadly comparable. However that changed very significantly in 2007 when the NATO Military Committee signed off a document on the future transformation of NATO Electronic Warfare (MCM-0142 27 Nov 2007); the major thrust of the new policy and concept was to recognise the Electromagnetic Environment (EME) as an operational environment or domain like all the others (Land, Air Maritime, etc) where the full range of manoeuvre activities - offence, defence, shaping, exploitation, management, etc. – take place. Provided the non-US NATO, and potentially other, reader understands this, Introduction to Electronic Defense Systems is an invaluable and outstanding guide and technical handbook. It is an ideal introduction for those who are starting in the field as system designers; to users and potential users, and to all concerned now or in the next decade in the procurement of such systems. These are exactly the target audiences identified in the Author's Preface. The author concludes the Preface with a wish that readers will find the book useful. I have no doubt that readers will in fact find the book invaluable and essential reading to help them for many years in making progress in their chosen careers. -- John Clifford * Wing Commander OBE MBCS CEng CITP RAF (Retd) *

Table of Contents
Electronic Defense. This text teaches state-of-the-art machine learning technologies to students and practicing engineers from the traditionally “analog” disciplines—mechanical, aerospace, chemical, nuclear, and civil. Dr. McClarren examines these technologies from an engineering perspective and illustrates their specific value to engineers by presenting concrete examples based on physical systems. The book proceeds from basic learning models to deep neural networks, gradually increasing readers’ ability to apply modern machine learning techniques to their current work and to prepare them for future, as yet unknown, problems. Rather than taking a black box approach, the author teaches a broad range of techniques while conveying the kinds of problems best addressed by each. Examples and case studies in controls, dynamics, heat transfer, and other engineering applications are implemented in Python and the libraries scikit-learn and tensorflow, demonstrating how readers can apply the most up-to-date methods to their own problems. Lenny has done a masterful job of capturing the spirit of OMG SysML as a practical, standards-based modeling language to help systems engineers address growing system complexity. This book is loaded with matter-of-fact insights, starting with basic MBSE concepts to distinguishing the subtle differences between use cases and scenarios to illumination on namespaces and SysML packages, and even speaks to some of the more esoteric SysML semantics such as token flows." -Jeff Estefan, Principal Engineer, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory "The power of a modeling language, such as SysML, is that it facilitates communication not only within systems engineering but across disciplines and across the development life cycle. Many languages have the potential to increase communication, but without an effective guide, they can fall short of that objective. In SysML Distilled, Lenny Delligatti combines just the right amount of technology with a common-sense approach to utilizing SysML toward achieving that communication. Having worked in systems and software engineering across many domains for the last 30 years, and having taught computer languages, UML, and SysML to many organizations and within the college setting, I find Lenny's book an invaluable resource. The author presents a very clear and highly readable view of this powerful but complex modeling language, illustrating its use via easy-to-follow practical examples. Although intended primarily as an introduction to SysML, I have no doubt that it will also serve as a handy reference for experienced practitioners." -Bran Selic, president, Malina Software Corp. "SysML is a rather intimidating modeling language, but in this book Lenny makes it really easy to understand, and the advice throughout the book will help practitioners avoid numerous pitfalls and help them grasp and apply the core elements and the spirit of SysML. This biography is one of the first thorough introductions to his work, it should get the attention of mathematicians, natural scientists and philosophers."--Ferdinand Verhulst, European Legacy "Gray, a mathematics historian and scholar on the life and work of Henry Poincare, has, with the support of a Leverhulme Research Fellowship, produced this comprehensive and definitive 'scientific biography.' Gray offers abundant rich information on Poincare's ideas and scientific process, the evolution and maturity of his mathematics including missteps, the dexterity of his reasoning, and the influences that shaped his thought."--Choice "I recommend [this] book highly."--Robert E. O'Malley, Jr., SIAM Review "Jeremy Gray's book on Poincare's mathematics, physics, and philosophy is an important contribution to the literature and a huge step towards a full biography of this pioneer of modern science."--Reinhard Siegmund-Schultze, Zentralblatt MATH "Gray's book is a comprehensive scientific biography of Poincare. It embraces the broad scope of Poincare's work, from his philosophical speculations to his popular writing, and gives a thorough overview of his extensive mathematical researches."--Peter Lynch, Irish Mathematical Society Bulletin "[T]he author does not simply give platitudes when writing about Poincare's ideas: mathematicians will enjoy reading about his discoveries concerning the three-body problem, the theory of functions, topology, number theory, Lie theory, algebraic geometry, and probability. This scientific biography is the first to comprehensively cover all of Poincare's main contributions to mathematics, philosophy, and physics."--Alan S. McRae, Mathemematical Reviews Clippings "Jeremy Gray has done a marvelous job of exposition and of binding together the many different cognitive, social and biographical strands into the coherent whole of a challenging, but highly rewarding, 'scientific biography'."--Klaus Hentschel, British Journal for the History of Science "A good intellectual biography of an artist should help the reader see how a particular worldview shapes the pursuit of art. Gray's book does that most admirably."--Daniel S. Alexander, H-France Review "Henry Poincare is likely to remain the standard by which scientific biographies, at least those that concern physicists and mathematicians, are judged for some time."--Christopher Cumo, Canadian Journal of History "I warmly recommend the book to anyone with an interest in the development of modern mathematics. It will surely be the definitive scientific biography of Poincare for the foreseeable future."--John Stillwell, Notices of the AMS "Gray describes Poincare's scientific epoch in a beautiful way. Due attention is paid to the mathematical and further scientific aspects of his life, and the intellectual complexity of his achievements, both in their range and their depth, are amply discussed. Gray displays a mastery of his material that is rare even among historians of mathematics and science, and his biography is richly rewarding, engrossing, and informative. He deserves our congratulations."--H. W. Broer, Journal of the British Society for the History of Mathematics "Gray succeeds admirably in presenting both the conceptual and the historical context necessary to appreciate Poincare's contributions. Gray's masterful biography may well serve as a standard example for future endeavors of this kind."--Tilman Sauer, Isis "The obvious virtue of this book is its comprehensiveness. The deeper virtue is to connect Poincare's views of all the parts of his work and to encourage more of that. Gray gives us Poincare's view of Science as a whole."--Colin McLarty, Mathematical Intelligencer "The book is an endless source of interesting insights by Poincare... I would recommend the book for mathematicians, mathematics educators, and philosophers in higher education who want a rich understanding of Poincare, his work, and his times."--Mary L. Workplace Visual Thinking
Book Synopsis

Visual Workplace/Visual Thinking (VWVT) was written by the acknowledged leading expert in workplace visuality. While other books touch upon visual workplace tools and practices, no other author has addressed the topic with the clarity and depth presented here. This is a seminal book, considered by many the definition of the field itself. First published by a small, independent press in 2005, the book won the prestigious Shingo Research Prize in the same year.

It was then and remains the only book of its kind that describes the conceptual and practical foundation for workplace visuality, derived from dozens of hands-on implementations in some of the worldâs best or most challenging companies. Written not by an academic, but by a hands-on practitioner who has worked for three decades with companies in various phases of visual transformation, the work carries the reader from the usual starting point of 5S through to the full power of the visual-lean alliance.

The bookâs 11 chapters are in four sections. The first defines the visual workplace in relation to operational excellence, along with the eight building blocks of visual thinking. The next section, which targets the cultural conversion, is unexpectedly thrilling as it describes the genuine transformation of both company and employee which is at the heart of every visual conversion.
