They provide fuel for the body by breaking apart other living things; and they must do it again and again over a lifetime without themselves being broken in the process. This means that plants and animals have developed tough or hard tissues for protection, and teeth have evolved ways to sharpen or strengthen themselves to overcome those defences. And just as different jobs require different tools, animals with different diets have different shaped teeth to deal with the variety of foods that they eat.In this Very Short Introduction, Peter S. Ungar, an award-winning author and leading scientist, presents the story of teeth. Ungar outlines the key concepts, including insights into the origin of teeth and their evolution. Considering why teeth are important, he describes how they are made, and how they work, including their fundamental importance in the fossil record. Yet our approach to dental care has been fearful, costly, and segregated from other parts of the body. We've long known that oral health echoes our overall well-being. But what if we were to flip the paradigm? What if we thought about dental health as the foundation for our physical health?

Dr Steven Lin, an experienced dentist and the world's leading dental nutritionist, has forged a new scientific outlook to reshape our perception of dental disease. Through ancestral medicine, epigenetics and an examination of the oral and gut microbiome, Dr Lin has developed food-based principles for a holistic health approach that is literally top-down. Merging dental and nutritional science, Dr Lin lays out the dietary program that prevents painful cavities and dental treatment, giving you the resources to raise kids who develop naturally straight teeth. His 40-day meal plan is complete with the Dental Diet food pyramid, exercises for the mouth, recipes and cooking techniques to help you easily and successfully implement these practices in your everyday life.

Since our mouth is the gatekeeper of our entire body, keeping our oral microbiome balanced is essential for creating and maintaining a healthy and wholesome self. Often, the diagnosis of these diseases is neglected or wrongly performed. This concise book guides health professionals in clinical decision making in oral diseases, assisting them not only on the diagnosis and treatment of oral and maxillofacial diseases, but also in terms of value and benefit of who treats the condition and, above all, who will be treated. The work provides guidelines formulated by a compilation of specific protocols of conduct, focusing on the scientific evidence and enriched by the authors’ critical analyses.
The book is divided into eight main sections that include twenty-eight chapters. Most of them have no more than 5 pages and follow the same format to standardize their use. Each chapter begins with a summary of the topic, a brief description of the main disease that fall into this diagnostic category, and their main definitions. Then, the clinical characteristics, ways of making the diagnosis, and a protocol for treatment for each lesion are presented. Additionally, the experienced authors interestingly discuss their perceptions on how to give bad news in the Oral Medicine setting; and the last section is especially dedicated to the dental management of medically complex patients or with little-known diseases, such as Burning Mouth Syndrome and COVID-19. There is a high amount of scientific information gathered so far; however data are rather divergent, sometimes even contradictory. Therefore, there is increasing need for integrating reviews of this highly important field of dentistry. This work presents an integration of several prosthetic-, surgical- and oral biological considerations of implant dentistry on a scientific level, with special respect to the problem of clinical decision-making. Further, this book also includes some chapters dedicated to rarely reviewed research areas like use of physiotherapy and psychosomatic considerations for implant dentistry, which also supply a great want. Relevant subject areas include: applied anatomy and bone biology for implant dentistry, mechanisms of osseointegration and peri-implant soft tissue healing, biomaterials for implant surgery, medical and dental evaluation of patient, diagnostic imaging for implant dentistry and other diagnostic tools, several prosthodontic and surgical considerations for treatment planning, implant surgery, management of pain, inflammation, peri-implantitis and other complication, immediate and delayed loading of implants, implant maintenance and after care, physiotherapy and psychosomatic considerations for implant dentistry as well as future perspectives of implant dentistry. Module-I is about activation of prior knowledge of basic medical and dental sciences and attainment of basic clinical knowledge and skills to prepare the residents for empathetic patient care. Real patient encounter starts in Module-II and, from here onwards, all areas of respective modules are according to treatment requirements at different stages. Each module has six distinct areas, (ie: Learning Objectives, Topics to be Covered, Reading List, Table of Specifications, Assessment Methods and Check List). After successful adoption of this modular form of teaching, residents should attain the appropriate knowledge, proper attitudes and basic skills of orthodontics. This programme also enables the resident to develop a sense of professionalism, knowledge about medical ethics, scientific attitude, an inquisitive mind and a quest for research and Continuing Professional Development. A modular form of postgraduate training in orthodontics is suggested with an intention to standardize Orthodontic training across the country.

Table of Contents
Foreword; Derek Mahony; Preface; Acknowledgments; Abbreviations; Introduction; General Instructions; Knowledge; Skills; Attitudes; Some Important Points; Criteria For Fitness to Appear in Exit Examination; Module-I; Module-II; Module-III; Module-IV; Intermediate Exam (At the Completion of Modules I-IV); Module-V; Module-VI; Module-VII; Module-VIII; Exit Exam (At the Completion of Modules I-VIII); BI-Annual Review Proforma (B-ARP); Sample of Schedules; Sample of Weekly Time Table; List of Logistics for Residents; Annexures; Log Book; References; Index; About This Book.
Book Synopsis
The book presents extensive case reports covering various clinical dentistry disciplines. The common knowledge around plants' healing properties, known as folk medicine, has been transmitted over the centuries for generations throughout human communities. The use of natural products and herbal medicines have been documented in the past. The antibacterial activity of plant extracts has been reported since the late 1800s and some of these traditional medicines are still used, especially in the last decade, with more intensive studies for natural therapies. Active compounds produced during vegetal metabolism are responsible for the antimicrobial and biological properties interacting with specific chemical receptors in the human body and, due to these components, plants extracts are popular as anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial or anti-fungal drugs. However, in the absence of scientific studies, the use of aleatory plant extracts may lead to harmful adverse effects. Previously considered empirical, current data on the antimicrobial activity and biocompatibility of numerous plants have been scientifically confirmed. Phytosciences, as ethnopharmacology or phytotherapy, are emerging multidisciplinary areas with almost unlimited sources and several aspects to be discussed. Recently, there has been a growing trend to seek natural drugs as part of dental treatment. In dentistry, the association of plant extracts with restorative dentistry, endodontics or periodontics materials have been used to reduce inflammation, as antimicrobial enhancer agent, antiseptics, antifungals, antioxidants, analgesics or even as mouth rinse to prevent or reduce dental plaque. Thus, this book will address the use of plant extracts in different fields of dentistry, highlighting its use in cariology, restorative dentistry, endodontics and periodontics, besides other uses of herbal plants in dentistry, as in dental trauma, osteointegration or hemostatic, among others. As will be shown and stated, the vast variety of different plants described in literature with medicinal properties makes it impracticable to discuss all extracts found in scientific literature. Therefore, this book will contribute with some of these extracts and different methodologies to assess, as an introduction to new research and new researchers. Also, different in vivo and in vitro tests used to evaluate biological response, such as biocompatibility and antimicrobial activity in dental treatment will be discussed.

Table of Contents
Dedication; Preface; Empirical Use of Plant Extracts: Herbal Care in Medicine and Dentistry; Antimicrobial Properties of Plant Extracts; Biocompatibility of Plant Extracts; Phytotherapy in Cariology and Restorative Dentistry; Phytotherapy in Endodontics; Phytotherapy in Periodontics; Other Applications of Plant Extracts in Dentistry; Index.
Book Synopsis
This book focuses on new research in dentistry practices.
